In collaboration with charities and volunteers working in India and around the world, Charity United is providing education to children living in slums. We provide education and improve education quality in poor areas, with the aim of giving all children an equal opportunity for a good future.
William Tucker, President and cofounder of Charity United, brought a small team of volunteers to the Mayo College in Ajmer, India, to deliver a study workshop over a period of several days. The Mayo College school counselor, in her own words, described the program as “magic.” She had never seen results such as those obtained during this workshop. Students who are not doing well are far more likely to fall prey to bad habits than those who are doing well. With declining literacy rates and increasing study problems, more and more youngsters are falling prey to temptation. Drug pushers and other criminals take advantage of those who have a hard time learning, and lead them astray.
How many human rights can you name? Five, ten, fifteen? Or can you name each and every one of them? Most of us cannot name them all off the top of our heads, but it's good to try. The human right we like to focus on is the right to education.
In 1994, Humanity scored a major victory with the official end of Apartheid in South Africa, and while much progress has been made since this date, over 50 percent of the population still lives in poverty, with a large portion of these living in extreme poverty. In the extreme-poverty sectors of South Africa, the so called “squatter camps,” little to no progress has been made. Due to their economic situations, time has essentially stood still since that momentous occasion, and they are still living in the same conditions as they did during Apartheid.
Imagine a place where grocery stores often are empty, where you might walk 20 kilometers in scorching heat to reach a gas station for fuel for your car, where water or electricity can be off for a week at a time, and where parents have begun to abandon young children on the streets for lack of money to feed them.
As you may know, over the past several months, and because of your donations, Charity United has been able to pay for for the rent, utilities, and much of the food and other expenses for a home for refugee families with children, in Greece. We have some exciting changes and news which I would like to share.
Team Humanity and Charity United have joined forces on a new refugee aid project. We are giving refugees (families with children and pregnant women) the opportunity to move out of cold, dirty, inhuman camps, into warm and safe rooms in a community center.
In November 2015 we set out with an enormous task - to provide winter clothing to tens of thousands of refugees as they passed through Macedonia in their search for safety and a future home in Western Europe. Today is the first day of spring. Winter has officially ended.
He arrived to us with no shoes. He had only socks, which had obviously been what he was walking around in. We gave him new boots.
