When I started this program, I did not know how much English I did not know. I grew up in New York in the late 1950s; my parents were from Italy and did not know how to speak English. I had a hard time reading and got utterly lost in school.
I tried to fix this many times during my life and paid a lot of money to tutors, but they were not able to fix my literacy. I was just a parrot, just saying words but not fully understanding them or really understanding how to use them. It was not until this program that I started to understand grammar at all. Before, I was totally clueless! So as I did the program, my understanding became better and better.
I noticed people started to understand me better and understood them as well. Wow! My biggest change is that I do not have to get someone to translate how and what I was saying into something others could understand! This was heartbreaking to me because I was never even fully sure that these people fully understood me.
But now I understand enough basic English to write this success story. And I know you can understand what I am saying. I’d like to thank the creators of the program for their work in producing this amazing program. I’d also like to thank all the volunteers running the program for the community. It has been a lifesaver for me.
By the by, I am 73 years old. It’s better late than never.
