How are you

She was very shy. But her mother whispered into her ear and told her to say, “How are you?” in English – Obviously something she had been taught before.

She very slowly and carefully tried it. “How are you?” she said. As if uncertain whether those noises coming out of her mouth could possibly mean anything. And when I smiled and responded, “I’m fine, thank you, how are you?” she just looked at me in shock. Amazed that those sounds she had made had not only been understood but had received a pleasant response.

I think she was kind of in shock that she really wasn’t speaking gibberish.
